Stanford University was founded in 1885 by Leland Stanford (a California senator) and Jane Stanford (his wife). Their sole child, who was afflicted with typhoid in childhood, died from the disease. As a way to remember their son, Leland Stanford and Jane Stanford decided to establish a university on their farm. It offered both traditional liberal arts and engineering and technology courses that helped shape America in the 1960s.
