Stanford University was founded by Leland Stanford and Jane Stanford in 1885. They were both California senators and Jane Stanford was their wife. The university was created to promote public welfare and influence humanity. To honor their husband, they established a university at their farm. It was able to teach both the traditional liberal arts and the engineering and technological innovations that were shaping America at that time.
